The Israel Parliament today began a debate on the unemployment situation in the country, after Labor Minister Golda Myerson reported that the number of unemployed had climbed to just under 17,000.
Mrs. Myerson said that the main cause of unemployment were a variety of obstacles encountered by the government development authority. She said that the government expected to place half of the unemployed on various projects that would provide from three to six months’ work. For the others, whose number may grow, she said, there is an urgent need to provide jobs. In the future, the government will concentrate on finding employment primarily for those men and women who desire to work on the land or to enter “productive trades,” Mrs. Myerson concluded.
