A serious communal split threatens Johannesburg Jewry as a result of the decision of the Berea Hebrew Congregation to secede from the Transvaal Federation of Synagogues, an Orthodox organization.
The secession was precipitated over sharp differences of opinion between Rabbi Moshe Swift, spiritual leader of the Berea Congregation, and various colleagues on the Federation’s ecclesiastical court, which is presided over by Chief Rabbi A. Rabinowitz. Rabbi Swift resigned from the Beth Din and took his fight to the congregation, which reached its decision at a closed meeting,
