A contribution of $100,000 toward the establishment in Israel of a School of Economics and Social Science has been made by Joseph Cherner, industrialist and philanthropist, of Miami Beach, Florida and Washington, D.C., it was announced by Henry Montor, secretary of the American Friends of Israel, an American philanthropic institution. The school, which will be the first of its kind in Israel, will be established in Jerusalem in memory of Eliezer Kaplan, the first Minister of Finance in the State of Israel, who died last July.
“The example which Mr. Cherner has set will undoubtedly be emulated by other close friends of Mr. Kaplan in the United States and elsewhere,” the announcement said. “It is not intended that there shall be any widespread campaign. It is assumed, however, that individuals who are close to the Israel scene and who have a special concern for the economic aspects of the country’s development will take the opportunity of making it possible for the School of Economics and Social Science to be built and to grow.”
