Some 2,400 Israeli civil service employees will be discharged by the end of March, Pinchas Lavon, head of the Ministerial Efficiency Committee, revealed at a press conference today. He added that the committee expects that an additional 2,400 will be dismissed before the committee completes its overhaul of the governmental structure.

Minister Lavon stressed that these were not economy firings, but rather an attempt to tighten the government administrative machinery by doing away with unnecessary officials and ending duplication of work. He added, however, that such a tightening of the government apparatus must of necessity make for a more economical operation.
