Canadian Jewish Congress Asks Govt. to Check Promotion of Hostility

The Canadian Jewish Congress has submitted a brief to a special committee of the House of Commons dealing with the Criminal Code,asking that changes be made in the code to ban the promotion of hostility among groups or classes within Canada.

The brief was prefaced with the general statement that the Jewish community was interested in the entire question and many of its members had views on many of the proposed changes which they would make as members of other groups or associations, but that there were specific questions involving public mischief, free speech, spreading of false news and sedition, in which the Jewish ethnic groups had a very special interest prompting them to make their views known.

The submission was well received in a one and one-half hour session by a well attended meeting of the Special Committee of the House of Commons and evoked many questions which were answered by representatives of the Canadian Congress. The chairman and members of the House Committee of all parties indicated a lively interest and were very complimentary in their expressions, both officially and after the hearing.
