Senator Herbert H. Lehman, who yesterday celebrated his 75th birthday, was the recipient of many messages hailing his work such as a distinguished public servant and a leader in philanthropic causes.
The New York Times, in an editorial reviewing his public record as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of New York State, director of UNRRA and United States Senator, declared: “To all that he has brought a keen intelligence, a humane spirit and an urgent sense of responsibility.”
The officers of the United Jewish Appeal and the members of the UJA national campaign cabinet paid their tribute to Sen. Lehman in a resolution noting his “self-less devotion, vision and generosity.” The UJA resolution, which also stressed his career in public life and in UNRRA, singled out his leadership in and concern with the Joint Distribution Committee and the UJA.
