Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett yesterday paid a courtesy visit to Brazilian President Getulio Vargas. Mr. Sharett will remain in this city until Thursday when he leaves for a two-day visit to Sao Paulo.
In another audience, he spent an hour discussing relations between Israel and Brazil with Brazilian Foreign Minister Joao Neves da Fontoura. One of the subjects covered was the trade agreement between the two states which is currently being negotiated. After the conference, Minister da Fontoura tendered a luncheon in Mr. Sharett’s honor, at which Brazilian government leaders and members of its Senate and Congress were present.
At a press conference at which he discussed Brazilian-Israeli relations, Israel relations with various states and its relations with Jewish communities abroad, Mr. Sharett declared that no diplomatic relations will be established between Israel and Germany for the time being. He also expressed his country’s gratitude for the assistance given it in the United Nations by Brazil. The entire Brazilian press has devoted considerable space to his visit, publishing photographs and biographical accounts of the Israeli Minister.
Mr. Sharett, who was greeted at the Rio de Janeiro airport by 6,000 Brazilian Jews, was also met at the Porto Alegre airfield hours earlier by several thousand Jews. Mr. Sharett’s plane touched down at Porto Alegre, site of Brazil’s third largest Jewish community, while it was en route from Montevideo to the Brazilian capital. The crowd at Porto Alegre insisted that Mr. Sharett speak to them.
