Jacob Gitlin, the “father of Cape Zionism,” died here yesterday at the age of 74. Mr. Gitlin who came to South Africa from Lithuania in 1902, became identified with the small Zionist movement from almost the day he landed in the Union.
Although most of his activities were restricted to the Zionist movement in the Cape Province, he was well known and respected among world Zionist leaders. He was also active in other community activities. One of his daughters is the editor of the Capetown Jewish Chronicle and another daughter is on the staff of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem while a son holds a leading medical post in Israel.
