Arabs Break Pact to End Border Tension; Attack Israel Village

The British Ambassador and the American Charge Affaires in Israel were today invited to call at the Israeli Foreign Office to receive a report on an attack last night on an Israel village near Lydda by a gang of murderous from Jordan. The attack took place barely a few hours after Israel and Jordan reached a new accord for local commanders to take action designed to end infiltration and border tension.

Israel immediately protested the raid, in which one Israeli was murdered and two homes were blasted, to the Mixed Armistice Commission and demanded an emergency meeting of the unit to act on the latest provocation. Today the military attaches of the western powers and the Turkish Minister visited the scene of the attack.

At another emergency meeting yesterday the MAC ruled Jordan responsible for the killing of one Israeli and the wounding of three others by Arab murderous Saturday night. The killers were traced to Jordan territory from the scene of their crime in a Jerusalem suburb.

Yesterday’s agreement on local commanders provided, among other points, that the local commanders of both side make available to each other any information they may obtain about infiltration. It was also agreed that soldiers who accidentally cross borders would be returned to their own forces within five days after they were apprehended:
