The 700 delegates attending the 66th annual convention of British Abraham here were urged today by Justice Herman Hoffman of New York, who is a past Grand Master of the Order, to rededicate themselves “to the American creed to meet the challenge of Communism and totalitarianism.”

The convention adopted a resolution terming Communism and all forms of totalitarianism as “enemies of human liberty and democracy,” and adding: “As American Jews, we are committed to the democratic system, which has proven beyond question its superiority above all other systems of human society in providing the material, the moral and the spiritual basis for the full flowering of human creativity, achievement and brotherhood.”

A resolution calling upon the U.S. Congress to approve the mutual security bill for the Near East as presented by the Eisenhower Administration, with its provision for economic and military assistance to Israel and the Arab countries, was adopted here last night at the 30th annual convention of the Hapoel Hamizrachi, religious labor Zionist party of America.

The 600 delegates also called for a program of relief and rehabilitation of Jewish and Arab refugees. “This program,” they pointed out, “will strengthen those forces in the Near East ready to join the defense of the free world. It will give concrete expression of American friendship for all the peoples of the Near East and encourage them to negotiate a peaceful settlement for their own progress.”

Another resolution urged the American people and our government of the United States to, continue to exert its efforts on its own part and through the, United Nations to promote, by direct negotiations between the Arab State and Israel, an early peaceful settlement and permanent political stability throughout the Near East.

The convention called upon the Government of the United States to preserve all social gains as the, “most effective weapon in the battle against communism.”
