Israel is a candidate for a vice presidency of the United Nations General Assembly which opened its eighth regular session today. Of the seven vice presidencies, five are reserved for the great powers and two are selected by vote of the General Assembly. Mexico and Pakistan are contesting with Israel for the two open positions. The seven vice presidents sit on the steering committee of the Assembly. Election of the Assembly’s vice presidents will be held tomorrow.
