Residents of Jerusalem were awakened this morning by a loud explosion, accompanied by wild shooting from across the Old City walls.
In the afternoon, Jordan reported that one of the water pipes in the Old City, held by Jordan, was blown up by unknown persons. The Jordanians charged Israelis with responsibility, but both the Israel Army as well as the Israel Foreign Office denied the allegation and termed it “without foundation.”
United Nations observers started an investigation into the cause of the explosion. The Jordan radio said that Jordanian authorities found foot prints leading away from the place of the explosion toward the Hadassah Hospital in the demilitarized zone. The broadcast said that the explosion ripped the main water line leading into the Arab section of Jerusalem and cut off its water supply.
