The Israel Parliament referred to the Ministries of Education and Interior a draft bill which would compel every Israeli cinema to show an Israel-produced newsreel at each performance. All parties support the measure.
Israel Rokach, General Zionist deputy who introduced the legislation, said his bill would protect the struggling pioneer Israel film industry which is finding it tough sledding despite the fact that it is “doing great cultural work” such as presenting new immigrants with facts of Israel national life, familiarizing the people with the country’s scenery and helping immigrants learn Hebrew.
Mr. Rokach reported that 25,000,000 admissions are paid annually to the 120 Israeli film houses, which hardly ever show Israeli films, and that foreign film producers earn an annual profit of 3,500,000 Israeli pounds.
