The Austrian Finance Ministry today invited Wilhelm Krell, general secretary of the Jewish community, to discuss with the ministry the local community’s views on Jewish claims for restitution and indemnification, in the light of the statement last week by Chancellor Julius Raab that the Austrian Government was willing to negotiate on Jewish claims for a lump sum settlement of heirless Jewish property.

A community spokesman today declared that the Austrian Jews “wholeheartedly” support the position of world Jewish groups on claims against Austria. Meanwhile, the Jewish community has decided to publish a memorandum outlining the Jewish demands, so as to keep the public informed.

President Emil Maurer of the Vienna Jewish community expressed concern today that the Austrian Government’s attitude vis-a-vis the Jews would be reflected in Austrian business dealings with foreigners and in the tourist trade.
