Two Slovakian Jewish leaders were under arrest for several days recently because they threatened to complain about the closing down of five synagogues in Slovakia, it was reported here today.
The report said that the two, Slovakian Chief Rabbi Elias Katz and Joseph Lipa, were arrested while attending a meeting of the Council of Czechoslovakian Jewish Communities in Prague after they told several government-appointed functionaries that they would complain to the Bureau of Church affairs against the synagogue closures. They were released a few days later, the report added, on the understanding that they would make no further complaints.
