The State Department said today that a report published today in a New York newspaper that only $24,000,000 was requested of Congress for 1955 for Israel and Iran combined was without foundation in fact.
The Department could not make public the actual figure of assistance asked for Israel, but indicated it was considerably more than the sum mentioned in the erroneous report. Members of Congress have been informed secretly of only a tentative figure for Israel, a figure which is less than the amount asked for the last fiscal year, but one which is nevertheless substantial.
Departmental sources made known that the actual development of programs and conditions in Israel and the Arab states would guide the extension of the assistance sought from Congress for the fiscal year of 1955.
