The United States Government was called upon to prevail upon the Arab states to enter into direct negotiations with Israel in a resolution unanimously adopted at a large emergency rally held tonight under the auspices of the Manhattan Region of the Zionist Organization of America.
Asserting that “full responsibility for the present dangerous situation in the Middle East must be borne by the Arab states, whose unconcealed threats to destroy Israel and whose guerilla warfare along Israel’s frontiers have produced a succession of tragic incidents costing many human lives along both sides of the border, the resolution continues:
“A solution to this problem can be achieved only by forthright action on the cause of the mounting unrest, rather than on its symptoms. The root of the problem is the continued refusal of the Arab states to negotiate directly with Israel, not only with respect to peace, but even on the implementation of the existing Armistice Agreements.”
Rabbi Irving Miller, ZOA president, in his address, warned that “there is very grave danger that the steadily deteriorating situation in the Middle East may end in open warfare.” The speaker charged that “the absence of peace, the persistent refusal of the Arab states to translate the Armistice Agreement into a final settlement with Israel is the basic problem which underlies every incident between Israel and the Arab states. Other speakers included Congressman Jacob K. Javits, Harry Torczyner and Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum.
