Mayor Wagner today proclaimed May as “United Jewish Appeal Month” in New York City. In a ceremony in his office at City Hall, he issued a proclamation calling upon New Yorkers “of all faiths to join in contributing generously” to the drive. Mr. Wagner is serving in the campaign as chairman of the Non-Sectarian Community Committee for the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York.
In his proclamation, the Mayor pointed out that the half million persons in need and danger whom UJA agencies are helping include victims of war, oppression and poverty, newcomers to Israel “building a new democracy on an exposed frontier of the free world, ” refugee immigrants to the United States “in need of a helping hand,” and young Americans serving in the armed forces and “needing a link with home.”
