A strong attack on members of the South African Parliament who make “veiled threats against the Jewish community” in their opposition to specific Jewish members of Parliament was voiced here today by I. Horowitz, chairman of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
Addressing a meeting of the Board, Mr. Horowitz hit out at two Nationalist deputies who recently attacked Bernard Friedman, an M.P., for his criticism of their party. In the course of their remarks they accused Mr. Friedman of engendering anti-Semitism in this country by his remarks.
Mr. Horowitz declared that “it was disturbing to see veiled threats against the Jewish community because the views of a Jewish M. P. might or might not be popular with other members.” This, Mr. Horowitz charged, was a denial of freedom of expression for the M. P. and “was an indefensible attack on the Jewish community for the views–right or wrong–of a Jewish M. P., who is not the spokesman for the Jewish community but for his constituency.”
