AUSTRALIAN JEWRY STIRRED OVER WHOLESALE ARRESTS OF JEWS IN RUMANIA

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry today condemned the “cruel and unjustifiable persecution” of Rumanian Zionist leaders and urged the Australian Government to “use its best endeavors with the Rumanian Government to stop the persecution and release the Zionist prisoners. “

The Executive Council statement declared that Australian Jewry “has been deeply stirred” by the reports of the trial and heavy sentences of imprisonment imposed on considerable numbers of the Jewish people who were “concerned only with the realization of the age-long aspiration of the Jewish people. ” The statement also expressed the opinion that reports of Rumanian authorities’ action would be received “with horror and indignation” not only in the Jewish community but “wherever men respect human dignity and intellectual freedom. “
