Herbert Morrison, last Foreign Secretary in the late British Labor Government, today expressed the opinion that the tremendous development which he has witnessed in Israel since his arrival here two days ago would not have taken place had the British Mandate over Palestine continued. The Mandate was surrendered and Israel independence achieved during the administration of the late Ernest Bevin, Mr. Morrison’s predecessor in office during the Labor Government.
Mr. Morrison, who was today a guest of the Histadrut, Israel’s general federation of labor, also said that he hoped Israel would be able to reach an understanding with its Arab neighbors and end the border tension which he witnessed when he visited Jerusalem yesterday. He extended British labor’s greetings to the Histadrut.
Mordecai Namir, secretary general of the Histadrut, stressed the ties of friendship between the two labor movements despite the differences and ill will which had developed toward the end of the Mandate. He called attention to the border situation and expressed the hope that Britain would learn from it and use such lessons in its future policy toward the area.
