Dr. Michael Amir, Israel envoy to the Netherlands, who died last week at the opening of an exhibition on Israel, was given a state funeral today by the Government of Holland. This is the first time in the history of this country that a Jewish diplomat was accorded this honor.
The hearse which took Dr. Amir’s remains to the airport for the journey to Amsterdam was accompanied by a military escort of 2,200 men. Among the pallbearers were the Dutch Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. M. Luns, three members of the diplomatic corps, the Chief Rabbis of the Sephardic and Ashkenazi communities, Jewish community leaders and Israel diplomats. Present at the ceremonies were representatives of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard, while the Queen and the Dutch Government sent wreaths to be placed on the casket.
