The Jewish Labor Committee, on behalf of a half million organized Jewish workers in both the AFL and CIO, appealed today to the State Department and to the United Nations to refuse Rumania admittance into membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The appeal, signed by Adolph Held, chairman of the JLC, declared that admission of Rumania into UNESCO was incompatible with UNESCO’s aims because Rumania, by persecuting Jews, “engages in cultural and spiritual genocide.” Admission of Rumania into UNESCO at this time, the appeal held, “would be tantamount to our acquiescence to the plight of the unfortunate people of that country.”
