A call to American Jewry to spearhead a “gigantic rescue program” to save thousands of young Jewish children in Moslem lands in the Near East from “illiteracy and spiritual disintegration” was voiced here this week-end by Rabbi Eliezer Silver, head of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States, at the 32nd annual national convention of the Agudath Israel of America.
Rabbi Silver, who is also a member of the Agudah executive, asked that educators be sent to these countries to open new Torah schools and that new religious children’s villages be established in Israel to absorb as many of these children as possible. The convention received a message from President Eisenhower, expressing the hope that the delegates “will carry away new and workable ideas on how you can help to deepen the sense of religious values in every community you represent.”
