A campaign target of five million dollars for the health, education and welfare program of Histadrut, Israel’s federation of labor, was announced here today by Dr. Herman Seidel, chairman of the National Committee for Labor Israel, at the close of a board of directors conference.
The board adopted a resolution endorsing the “Five Freedoms” on which Histadrut’s program for the coming year is based–freedom from disease, unemployment, homelessness, ignorance and want. The resolution pointed out that these constituted a renewed threat to Israel and menaced the social progress achieved at such great pains during the last six years. In its 31 years, the Committee has raised more than $35,000,000 for Histadrut’s educational, health and rehabilitation institutions.
The board heard a report on Israel’s security situation from Moshe Bitan, Histadrut representative in the U.S., who has recently returned from a trip to Israel. He expressed the apprehension of the Israeli Government and people that the arms granted to the Arab States by Western Powers might be turned against Israel instead of being used for defense against outside aggression. Isaac Hamlin, the Committee’s national secretary, reported on last year’s campaign.
