The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith disclosed today that it has asked for a prompt and full investigation of an outbreak of cross burnings over the past five months in various parts of Florida. Cross burnings are barred by Florida statutes.
In a letter to Attorney General Richard W. Ervin of Florida, Sanford M. Swerdlin, Florida State ADL chairman, declared: “Cross burnings are acts of attempted intimidation, rooted in hatred and intolerance, which may lead to further violence and disruption. The investigation of these acts ought properly to include a determination as to whether they have been inspired and perpetrated by any organized hate group or groups.”
