“In the past few weeks our neighbors have spread false rumors of peace, but while their mouths uttered peace their hands continued hostile activities,” Israel’s Defense Minister Pinchas Lavon declared, addressing a gathering of 7,000 youths on the value of their training for security and pioneering tasks.
Addressing the annual meeting of the Israel Journalists Association last night, the Defense Minister said that Israel would like one day to repay France for all the assistance which Israel has received from France in the time of Israel’s difficulties. Mr. Lavon made his statement in reply to French Ambassador Pierre Gilbert who, speaking in Hebrew, expressed the greetings of the diplomatic corps and stressed Franco-Israel friendship.
Mr. Lavon also told the assembled guests, who included most foreign diplomatic envoys in Israel and members of Israel’s Parliament and government, that despite Israel’s unique position within a hostile area, the Israel press would in the near future perform the important job of preaching the integration of all races and all inhabitants of the region.
