The 50-year-old Jewish philanthropic organization, “Zadoc Khan,” has instituted legal proceedings against the French Ministry of Finance for the recovery of property confiscated from the group by the Vichy Government. This is the first suit of its kind in France and, if successful, may set a precedent for other Jewish groups in this country.
During the German occupation of France, the Nazi-appointed Judenrat, acting on instructions from the Vichy Commissar for Jewish Affairs, confiscated a building in Strasbourg, stocks, bonds and a considerable sum in cash from Zadoc Khan. None of these assets were ever returned under the French law for reimbursement of victims of Nazism.
