Two Senators tonight reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship between the United States and Israel and called for a re-examination of the present American policy in the Middle East. The Senators, Democrat Estes Kefauver of Tennesee and Styles Bridges, Republican of New Hampshire, spoke at a dinner tendered in honor of Mortimer May, president of the Zionist Organization of America, by the American Zionist Fund.

Mr. May, in his address to the dinner, stressed the decades of bi-partisan support accorded by the American Government to the Zionists and the State of Israel. Noting that recent events have caused some concern, he expressed the opinion that such developments were “but for the moment.” Dr. Emanuel Neumann, chairman of the ZOA executive committee, presented Mr. May with a citation in honor of his many years of service to the Zionist cause and Israel.

Sen. Kefauver sharply criticized Secretary of State John Foster Dulles’ “new look” policy in the Middle East, asserting that this “policy of rearmament” of the Arabs must “inevitably upset the delicate balance of power and the uneasy stability that exists at present.” He chided the Secretary of State for referring to this policy as “impartial,” noting that the “impartiality” consists of giving arms to the Arabs and offering to sell them to Israel.
