Catholics in Britain have been forbidden to join the Council of Christians and Jews by Bernard Cardinal Griffin, head of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in this country, it was revealed here this week-end by the Catholic newspaper, “Universe.”
The newspaper said that the instructions had been issued by the Cardinal “because of the danger of indifferentism.” It offered no further explanation of the action. The Council of Christians and Jews was formed in Britain in 1942, with the participation of the heads of the major faiths, including Cardinal Griffin, who became co-presidents. It is understood that the Cardinal has resigned his presidency of the organization.
