Although the formal inauguration of the new rabbinical seminary in this city will not take place until Sunday, classes begin today. The school, which is recognized by the Turkish Government as the equivalent of a high school, is located at Haskoy, a nearby suburb which was the site of the old seminary half a century ago.
Rabbi David Asseo, secretary to the Turkish Chief Rabbi, has been named director of the seminary. The Chief Rabbinate has assured the school’s maintenance with a 50,000 lira annual grant. This is the first time since the establishment of the Turkish Republic that the Jewish community of this country will be able to train its own future rabbis and religious personnel.
