Nearly 83 percent of the Jews of Jacksonville are native-born Americans and 99.2 percent are American citizens, a Jewish community census study has established. The study represents a self-survey in which over 200 persons were involved, Ben Stark, executive director of the Jewish Community council here, pointed out.
Of the 4,072 Jews in Jacksonville, 3,367 were born in the United States, 1,374 of them in this city. In analyzing their occupations, the study established that 59.1 percent are proprietors, managers or officials of businesses or institutions; that 21,9 percent had clerical or sales jobs; that 14,7 percent were professionals or semi-professionals, and that 4,3 percent of all those gainfully employed were craftsmen or laborers.
There are 86 intermarried families in the city. Four of every five families are affiliated with a religious institution. The same percentage holds true for children attending a Sunday school. One of every two children attends a Hebrew school. There are 22 Jewish organizations in the city. The population is evenly divided with 2,051 males and 2,021 females. The average age of the male population among Jacksonville Jews is 32.4 years, and the average age for females is 32.1.
