Senator John Marshili Butler introduced a bill in the Senate this week-end directing the issue of a special series of three-cent postage stamps commemorating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the first Jews in America. In introducing the bill, Senator Butler noted the participation of Jews in Columbus’ voyage and the arrival of the first Jewish settlers in New York in 1654.
(The nine-month national celebration of the American Jewish Tercentenary will be concluded early in June with a public concert and meeting at Carnegie Hall in New York, it was announced in New York this week-end. Jacob Blaustein, associate chairman of the Tercentenary Committee and honorary president of the American Jewish Committee, has been named chairman of the committee to arrange the closing event.)
