“Leaders of the free world, out of a desire to strengthen the Middle East against aggression and subversion, are putting arms into the hands of the avowed enemies of Israel, indeed the avowed enemies of democracy,” Reuven Shiloah, Israel’s Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States, declared here at a conference of 300 Labor Zionists from California, Arizona and Texas which marked the opening of the West Coast 1955 United Jewish Appeal drive.

Emphasizing that “Israel today stands as a democratic island in a non-democratic Arab sea,” Mr. Shiloah drew attention to the fact that Israel is the only country in an area covering millions of square miles where the government is elected by the people. “We have raised and trained a defense force which is a source of strength and pride to freedom-loving people all over the world,” he reported.
