Construction of a $200,000 Haifa Community Center was begun here today with a cornerstone laying ceremony attended by United States Ambassador Edward B. Lawson, Canadian Ambassador Terence Macdermot, Minister of Posts and Telegraph Joseph Burg, Haifa Mayor Abba Choushi and Mizrachi leaders from the U.S. and Canada. Funds for the project were raised jointly by the American and Canadian Mizrachi women’s organizations.
Addressing the ceremony. Ambassador Lawson said that Israel youth were privileged to be among the first citizens of the new Israel “Children are a nation’s most important asset “he said “and by preserving the spirit and character of children you will preserve the spirit and character of the nation.” The American Ambassador also called upon the Israel people for courage, patience and restraint in the face of “seemingly intolerable conditions.” Then Ambassador Macdermot spoke and Rabbi Salman Reichman of New York and Mrs. B. Gottesfeld wielded the trowels in the cornerstone ceremony.
