Egyptian military forces in the Gaza area opened fire on an Israel patrol, it was announced here today. There were no casualties. The Egyptians used machine guns.
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. E.L.M. Burns, United Nations Chief of Staff of the Truce Organization, returned to Jerusalem today from Cairo where he conferred yesterday with Egyptian Premier Col. Gamal Abdel Nasser. A communique issued by UN headquarters in Jerusalem said that he and Col. Nasser conferred on “the serious situation in the Gaza strip and possible means of improving it.”
(Dispatches from the Egyptian capital reported that Col. Nasser had rejected an urgent “suggestion” from Gen. Burns that he talk with Israel leaders. After his meeting with Col. Nasser, Gen. Burns told newsmen that the Israel-Egyptian border situation is “dangerous.” but said, in reply to a question, that he hoped a war situation would not erupt from the present tension.)
