Jewish organizations hailed today the United Nations on its tenth anniversary which is being observed with a special session in San Francisco, lauding it decisions on human rights and on the establishment of Israel as an independent state. Some of the organizations sent special messages of congratulations to Dag Hammarskjold UN Secretary General.
Rabbi Irving Miller in a statement issued on behalf of the American Zionist Council, of which he is chairman urged the delegates from 60 nations assailed in San Francisco to continue their efforts to bring about “a just and speedy” peace settlement in the Middle East. “The attainment of a permanent peace settlement in the Middle East will truly demonstrate to all peoples the value and potency of the United Nations as a force for enduring world peace and give hope and comfort to all mankind, “the message said.
Irving M Engel president of the American Jewish Committee said in his message that his organization will give the UN maximum support in translating the principles of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights into “binding agreements.”
Philip M. Klutznick world president of B’nai B’rith, expressing the support of the UN by his organizations pointed out that constant pressure by the United Nations for cooperation among nations in matters of economic social and political affairs as well as its emphasis on human rights has helped to avert war.
The National Council of Jewish Women in a statement adopted by its board of directors emphasized that it has always supported the United Nations and pledged the strength of its membership to build up the United Nations “in the years to come. “(The Canadian Jewish Congress in a message of congratulation to the United Nations, lauded the progress made toward goals envisaged in the Declaration of Human Rights)
