A statement of principle calling for the elimination of prejudice directed against Jews was adopted at the Seventh Annual Interdenominational Institute on Racial and Cultural Relations at Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, it was reported today. The Institute was sponsored by the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States.
“Recognizing that prejudices exist among non-Jews within and without the Church,” the statement said, “the Church must reaffirm its doctrine of the dignity of man.” It further stated that “our Christian faith places upon us the responsibility of a Christian attitude toward our Jewish neighbors.”
Two of the Institute’s three sessions were devoted to drafting a statement to govern a wide variety of Christian opinion on Christian-Jewish relations, while the third session was highlighted by a discussion on tension issues in the Jewish and Protestant communities, Fred M. Grossman, Pennsylvania-West Virginia regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, addressed the sessions.
