The most prominent leaders of West German public life have greeted the Jewish community in this country and abroad on the occasion of the High Holy Days, in keeping with a practice that has become general since the establishment of the Federal Republic.
Recognizing in his message that “impatience and disappointment is still rife in the sphere of individual indemnification,” Prof. Theodor Heuss, the West German President, expressed the hope that in this respect “what is necessary and indicated can proceed, and will proceed, more speedily than heretofore.” He noted “with satisfaction” the smooth working of the Israel reparations agreement.
Chancellor Adenauer also referred to its “loyal implementation” which he declared, has played “a considerable part in overcoming the memories of a wretched past Friendly relations” to our Jewish fellow citizens” in Germany had been strengthened during the past year, his message stated.
