Groups of young Moslems today attacked bakeries in the Jewish section of the city and attempted to plunder them. They also attacked Jewish passersby. Police dispersed them.
A demand that Albert Bessis, the only Jewish member of the new all-Tunisian government, issue a statement condemning Zionism was voiced here this week-end by the Arabic weekly “Frazazou” which supports the Neo-Destour nationalists. Tunisian Jews, the newspaper said, are regarded as the compatriots of all other Tunisians and are being permitted to participate in the construction of the new Tunisia. But an anti Zionist statement by M. Bessis is necessary, the weekly continued, so that “our brothers of the Orient will know that we are still Arabs and Moslems.”
At the same time, the Arabic daily newspaper “Azzohra” has begun publication of a new series of articles against Zionism. The paper says that Palestine is an “Arab and a Moslem land–and it will be reconquered.” The paper blames the creation of the State of Israel on international politics and especially on the United States. The daily also deplores the disunity of the Arab countries, and calls for the renewal of close ties in pursuit of the common cause-the “uprooting” of Israel.
