Resolutions calling on the Italian Government to issue precise orders to central and local authorities with a view toward protecting the rights of religious minorities were submitted in Parliament here yesterday, following a debate on domestic affairs. Groups of leaders of the Italian Republican, Liberal and Social Democratic parties asked, in their resolutions, that assurances be given minorities of their right to hold public religious meetings and to open places of worship.
A group of Socialist deputies presented a resolution requesting the formulation of specific agreements with non-Catholic groups, as provided in Article 8 of the Constitution, and asking that existing police regulations be interpreted in the spirit of religious freedom promised by the Constitution. The resolutions were motivated by the limitations which have been placed on the activities of Protestant groups in Italy.
