The Egyptian Council of Ministers has approved a new military service law providing for compulsory military service for all male citizens at age 18, it was reported here today.
Cairo dispatches also reported that a fund-raising drive to obtain money from Egyptians for purchase of arms under contract from Communist countries is being conducted by the government. Government officials, led by Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser, are reportedly contributing a month’s salary to the campaign, university faculty members and sports organizations have announced donations to the fund, and the army says that the first day’s contributions totalled close to $1,500,000.
All local Jewish Masonic lodges in Egypt have been ordered dissolved by the Grand Masonic Lodge for Egypt and the Arab countries, “for the safety of the Arabs,” according to a report received here from Cairo. The Grand Lodge also passed resolutions supporting the Egyptian government’s policy for arming the country and denouncing “Zionism, imperialism and their agents.”
