The State Department reported today that it had received new information of Soviet bloc approaches to Israel in connection with the sale of munitions. Lincoln White, the Department’s press officer, said he was not at liberty to disclose the source of the new information but insisted that despite Soviet denials, it confirmed reports of approaches prior to the Department’s original statement on October 12 and of “further approaches” since that date. He said he assumed an assessment was made of the correctness of the information.
Asked if the State Department was aware of what Israel’s response might have been to the Communist approaches, Mr. White suggested that the question be referred to the Israel Government. The Israel Embassy here declined comment.
(A new military alliance between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, directed against Israel, is to be signed in Cairo tomorrow, according to Cairo broadcasts. It follows conclusion of a similar Egyptian-Syrian pact. The Yemen Government announced agreement with the Soviet Union for the exchange of diplomatic representatives and for Soviet-Yemen trade.)
