A new United Nations call to Israel and Egypt to “cease all aggressive activities and retaliations” and warning of the “grave moral responsibility” of the party who takes offensive action in the current situation, was issued here this week-end.
The call upon the Egyptians and Israelis to “restrict their operations to defense” only was issued by Maj. Gen. E. L. M. Burns with the specific sanction of Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. Gen. Burns, chief of staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine, made his requests in identical letters to Mordecai R. Kidron, deputy chairman of the Israel delegation here, and Dr. Mahmoud Fawzi, Foreign Minister of Egypt.
Before issuing the letters to Mr. Kidron and Dr. Fawzi, Gen. Burns and Mr. Hammarskjold conferred with representatives of the United States and Great Britain, informing these two governments, as signatories with France of the 1950 Tripartite Declaration ### ee### sr frontiers, about least developments in the Middle East.
