Efforts to bring the Catholics back into the British Council of Christians and Jews were reported here today by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Dr. Geoffrey Fisher. The Catholics withdrew from the Council more than a year ago, on instructions from the Vatican, over an issue of church doctrine.
British Chief Rabbi Brodie, a speaker at yesterday’s Council meeting, noted that the Council report of activities had mentioned the conning tercentenary celebration of British Jewry. This action, he said, underlined the fact that the celebration was of national importance and not merely a local affair.
Referring to the recently announced decision by Dr. Fisher to give a garden party on the occasion of the tercentenary. Dr. Brodie said this had given “delight and anticipatory gratification” to the Jewish community. The “relationship of the majority to the minority was distinctive and characteristic” of this country, the Chief Rabbi concluded.
