The World Zionist Executive was urged today, by the Zionist Federation of Britain, to delay its decision on the date of the forthcoming World Zionist Congress until the executive’s next meeting January 25. If that is not possible, the British group said, then it would abide by the majority decision to hold the Congress in April.
The Federation, in a statement published today said that the solidarity of Jews abroad with Israel was such that there was no need to hold a congress to rally it, nor to inform world Jewry of something it already knows; that Israel’s security situation is grave. But, the statement continues, the congress must allow ample time to consider the problems of the world Zionist movement and cannot put off consideration of them for another four years, as it did in 1951, nor can these problems be given cursory treatment sandwiched between speeches” on Israel’s security.
Finally, the statement suggested that an emergency, meeting of the Zionist Actions Committee would serve very well to consider the immediate needs of Israel and would thus allow the convening of the world congress at its “proper time and to fulfill its proper tasks.”
