An Egyptian freighter sailed from Liverpool for Alexandria last night with a cargo of 1,000 tons of British weapons supplied to the Cairo regime by the British Government.

Mrs. Elizabeth Braddock, an MP from Liverpool, addressing a Zionist meeting in that city yesterday, charged that there was a “racket” in the Ministry of Supply involving arms for Egypt, and expressed the hope that the matter would be brought to the attention of the public. A resolution adopted at the meeting welcomed the government’s decision to publish a White Paper on arms shipments to be Middle East and hoped that the outcome would be measures to guarantee Israel’s security and the establishment of peace in the Middle East.

Middle East problems, specifically the British supply of tanks to that area, continued as a dominant theme in the editorials of the press today. Meanwhile, it is understood that the government White Paper on arms shipments to Middle East states will be limited to the “surplus” sales through which many Valentine (light) tanks have reached Egypt and not to the government-to-government shipments which involve the Centurion (heavy) tanks which have considerably more military significance than the lighter vehicles.
