Secretary of State John Foster Dulles is seeking a Secret bipartisan agreement to keep the Arab-Israel issue out of domestic politics until after the November election, Congressional sources said today.
Mr. Dulles admitted at a press conference today that he was attempting to get Democrats, in the name of patriotism and American national interests, to avoid certain topics. But he declined to specifically identify the topics when asked to do–so. It was revealed by Secretary Dulles that he discussed the matter with chairman James P. Richards of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and chairman Walter P. George of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Democratic leadership sources in Washington said today that the Israel arms issue and other related questions were legitimate topics for debate and that Mr. Dulles would not achieve a formal party “truce” on the Middle East. In that region, these sources said, many Democrats feel State Department policy is open to question and criticism. Displeasure was indicated with State Department “failure” in the face of the Egyptian-Czech arms deal and the growing Arab-Israel crisis.
