Three Israelis Killed by Egyptian Fire; Jordan Attack Condemned

Three Israelis soldiers were killed today when heavy machine gun and mortar fire was turned on an Israeli patrol opposite the Gaza strip by fixed Egyptian positions across the border, a military spokesman announced here. The infantry patrol was inside Israel territory when the attack occurred. The Israelis returned the fire, using artillery to cover the retreat of the patrol.

In Jerusalem today, the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission condemned Jordan for an unprovoked attack on three Israeli automobiles by Jordanian’s who crossed into Israel to lay their ambush. One Israeli was wounded in the raid. The MAC condemned the raid as a “flagrant violation” of the armistice pact and called on Jordan to prevent recurrence of such attacks and thereby avoid aggravation of the situation along the border.
