The Combined Jewish Appeal has raised $3,530,000 since the 1956 campaign opened one month ago today. Nine fund-raising dinner meetings are scheduled for the current week as the Appeal goes into its second month. The goal is $6,825,000 for overseas and local needs, including immigration and resettlement in Israel.
With the campaign stressing a special $1,500,000 Survival Fund for the immigration and resettlement in Israel of 45,000 Jews from Morocco and Tunisia, the local campaign has speeded up its annual appeal to provide emergency funds before political or military events in the Middle East and North Africa make rescue efforts impossible, according to David Borowitz, general chairman of the campaign.
The Combined Jewish Appeal, which also provides part of the annual deficit financing required by the Jewish Federation’s affiliated hospitals and social welfare agencies in Chicago, makes its contribution to Jewish welfare nationally and overseas through the country wide United Jewish Appeal, A total of 34 relief, medical, educational, religious, immigration, and other institutions and agencies-national, overseas, and local–receive a portion of the local campaign dollar, it was announced. Spurred by the Middle East crisis, and the plight of disrupted North African Jewish communities, CJA contributions are running 25 percent, ahead of last year, it was reported.
